Grade level: Grade Six / Semester

Course Goals: Students will gain experience in research techniques, bibliography, image editing, web page layout and design, information technology and file management using image editing programs, web editors, and animation programs Microsoft Word 2007 and excel spreadsheet.

Students will be exposed to a variety of computer applications focusing on content creation in Web based and Print environments through a series of project-based modules.

The program is run in the computer laboratory and focuses on lecture and practical based tuition through exercises, set tasks and project based research.

Unit Description:  Introduction to Publisher

Students will learn how to create a student Newspaper using Microsoft publisher and image editing software.  Students will work in groups to plan and research articles and layouts for their project, each student will write 2 articles each for their newspaper, and as a team they will design the overall layout and graphic elements from their learning in class. Each group will have a chief editor to assist in organization and management of the project with the guidance and support of the teacher.

Software: Microsoft Publisher, Gimp image editing software

Assignment: Newspaper Project, Focus Planner, presentation

Unit Description:  Presentation Skills

Students will learn how to present information in a clear and interesting manner, outlining key points and ideas and using speech methods to give a confident and powerful presentation. The focus of this unit is to allow students to learn different presentation software online and other ways of presenting and communicating information like video, Skype, Voice thread, Jing.  This unit will ensure students understand and can use a variety of different media platforms effectively for their projects and school work. And be able to succinct handouts for their target audience.

Class Task 1: About Me – Design and present a Prezi presentation using the skills you have learnt in computer studies class.

Class Task 2: The students are to present information on a self chosen topic using a video camera or Mac camera. They will outline their topic and present their key ideas for the presentation on film; this will be edited in class and uploaded to YouTube. Students will critique each other’s work offering supportive ideas for improvement or suggestions on the topic for further discussion.

Unit Description: Research and Bibliography

Students will learn about research and referencing skills, bibliography and citation. Microsoft 2007. This unit has been developed to prepare students for essay writing and research in their other subject areas.

Assignment: Research Paper and PowerPoint Presentation

Unit Description: Excel Spreadsheet

Students will learn how to create excel spreadsheets with formula’s for accounting and bookkeeping purposes.

Assignment: Excel Spreadsheet plus support data and report.

Unit Description: Information Technology

How does it all work? New Technology, looking at networks, the internet and software

Evaluation: Test

Unit Description: Moviemaker

Students will learn how to use the Moviemaker software to create a class movie, students will develop scripts, plan, and film a 3 minute movie, they will use moviemaker software to edit their films and upload them to YouTube.

Assignment: Completed Movie, Movie Planning and development Planners, Presentation, Reflection Paper.

 The student will demonstrate a sound knowledge in Microsoft products, Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver; they will also understand how to use digital cameras, scanners, usb, and burning techniques.

The student will also explore and have experience with animation, research techniques and applying learnt applications to various projects for online and hardcopy delivery

Course Materials: This course uses a variety of software applications which contain tutorial and guided learning information. Students are expected to have a 4GB or up USB drive or storage device for their computer work.
