Computer Applications 2010 – 2011 Pre-requisites: Grade 7 Computers
Course Goals: Students will gain experience in research techniques, bibliography, image editing, web page layout and design, information technology and file management using image editing programs, web editors, and animation programs Microsoft Word 2007 and excel spreadsheet. Students will be exposed to a variety of computer applications focusing on content creation in Web based and Print environments through a series of project-based modules.
The program is run in the computer laboratory and focuses on lecture and practical based tuition through exercises, set tasks and project based research.
Advanced Research and Writing Skills
Unit Description: This program focuses on preparing students for advanced research methods and delivering a written essay based on the students own research. Mr. Pahls the ISE librarian will work with the teacher to assist students in organizing and evaluating their ideas to produce a formal essay following the correct MLA and writing guidelines.
Unit Objective: Students will learn and understand how to produce a well written essay that draws conclusions from the evidence they have researched, and be able to formulate a poignant response to their question.
Assignment: 1000 Word Essay with footnotes and bibliography

Learning Adobe Illustrator
Unit Description: Adobe Illustrator is a sophisticated graphics application that helps you to create complex and attractive designs with type effects. You can create logos, advertisements, and other illustrations with this software. In this course, you will learn to use Adobe Illustrator tools and options by drawing and manipulating shapes and images to create logos. You will also combine text and graphics to create information brochures.
Unit Objective: You will use Adobe Illustrator to create illustrations such as logos, brochures, artwork and t shirts that include type and graphics.
Delivery Method: Instructor led, group-paced delivery learning model with structured hands-on activities.
Performance-Based Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Create simple and freeform shapes.
- Create logos.
- Create logos using custom paths.
- Enhance text.
- Integrate Adobe Photoshop artwork with Adobe Illustrator
- Manipulate body type.
- Create a brochure.
- Understand creative briefs and working with different outputs.
- Organize creative assets using Adobe® Bridge.
Assessment: Class Task 1 ( all class tasks are graded and make up 15% of the final score ) Students will be allocated a tool set in Illustrator they are to research the tool using the help and support information included in the software, discuss what it does using a Presentation software and demonstrate to the class how to apply it in the illustrator setting.
Class Task 2: Create an Abstract image using the tools learnt in the first 2 weeks of the unit. The Abstract image must contain text and graphic, and demonstrate an understanding of the tools and how to apply them correctly when creating a vector image.
Major Project: To produce a professional brochure on a new travel destination. This new destination concept will be created by the students using the illustrator software. The brochure will reflect in its design, content and layout, the target audience and market that the product is intended for.

Adobe Design Tools – Production Workshop
Unit Description: Students will work with design software to develop a T Shirt, Logo and Packaging Design; this is an individual project where the students will have to create a marketing survey to investigate product demand and needs.
Assignment: Design a T-shirt line that includes packaging, product and logo design for the youth market.
Software: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Live Cycle
Advanced Web Production
Unit Description: Advanced Web Page Design: Macromedia Dreamweaver
Macromedia Dreamweaver Advanced Tools plus flash web elements, Style Sheets, Web Site Design Issues, Browser Issues, Directory management, styles and templates, video, sound.
Assignment: Web-Site Development, Design Portfolio
Anticipated Outcomes:
A. The student will know: The student will demonstrate a sound knowledge in Microsoft products, Adobe Photoshop, and Dreamweaver; they will also understand how to use digital cameras, scanners, usb, and burning techniques.
The student will also explore and have experience with animation, research techniques and applying learnt applications to various projects for online and hardcopy delivery
B. The student will be able to: Understand, evaluate, and create projects using a variety of software suitable to the project requirement.
