Publications

Publications presents the fundamentals of yearbook production including the skills necessary such as design, lay-out, copy writing, photography, advertising, and marketing. It is a hands-on course teaching all facets of yearbook production. The students “learn-as-they-do” producing the yearbook and other school publications. 

Publications 2010 – 2011 

Grade level: 10 – 12 

Semester or year-long class: 1 Year 

Pre-requisites: HS  Computers 

Course Goals: 

Students will gain hands-on experience in the areas of beat coverage, advanced image editing, advanced page layout and design, graphic design, reporting and writing using word processing programs, photography and staff management by producing a printed yearbook. 

Topic Outline: 

  1. Introduction to Adobe Design software, publisher and the print medium.
  2. Advanced organization, communication, research and planning methods.
  3. Desktop Publishing and page layout skills
  4. Yearbook page development for grade and event pages.
  5. Content and image collection / gathering methods
  6. Corrections editing and print output.

Anticipated Outcomes: 

  1. A.     The student will know:

The student will demonstrate an advanced knowledge and skill set on a range of design software applications in a project-based print environment. 

Students will have advanced information gathering and organization skills, and will also gain experience in independent learning, communication,  and research techniques. 

Students will know how to use Adobe Photoshop, Desktop Publishing and other design resources to complete their yearbook tasks. 

B. The student will be able to: 

The student will demonstrate an advanced knowledge and skill set on a range of design software applications in a project-based print environment. 

Students will have advanced information gathering and organization skills, and will also gain experience in independent learning and research techniques in Adobe Photoshop and other design resources. 

  • Understand, the print medium, and create yearbook pages using Adobe design software.
  • Work collectively and independently on the yearbook project.
  • Integrate images, text and layout principles, for a print output incorporating advanced design skills.
  • Work to deadlines and a brief for the specified task.
  • Gather, organize, manage and communicate information.
  • Allocate and set tasks.
  • Produce professional printed material.

Assessment Tools: 

  1. Grades are based upon timely completion of yearbook pages, design skills, research methods, and information and image gathering skills. 
  2. Portfolio – Each student is to create a hard copy portfolio of their work supported by a report about their design decisions and why and how they implemented each of their layouts. This will be submitted each quarter. Also part of the portfolio is a reflection paper about what they have learnt and how they have applied their skills to their work concerning designing, layout, and print production and communication for different age groups and events.

Course Materials: 

Recent yearbooks, other school yearbooks, class handouts, Adobe Classroom tutorials, online based tutorials and resources, a collection of magazine articles stored on the ISE computer network.
